Mother-Son Bond

I've always heard that mothers and sons have a special bond. As soon as we found out we were having a boy, I received emails and Facebook messages from all of my friends with sons saying things along the lines of "My little guy and I have so much fun together" or "Little boys LOVE their mommies!"

Fantastic! I've always enjoyed being adored.

But as I adore this little boy right back I've started to think about a few things. Yes, little boys love their mommies, but what about when they're not little boys anymore????

The other night Ricky and I were discussing this and I pointed out that he did not call or visit his mother nearly enough. He said that he used to call her all the time until he met me. (Oh, sure. Blame me!)

I think he thought that would make me feel better but instead it just reinforced what I was already worried about. One day my little boy is going to leave the house and NOT call me or come visit me as much as I would like. He will meet someone else and I will be cast aside.

I expressed this to Ricky who said "but don't you want him to love someone as much as I love you?"

Yes!

ME!!!!!!!

I have a new-found sympathy for my mother-in-law.

I've been watching my mom go through this with my brother for the last year as he's planning his wedding to the woman he's found to love as much as he loves my mom.
Just raise him to desire a woman who will encourage him to call and keep a connection going with you in case he does get that male communication breakdown that is oh! so common.
I think it's so important for my husband to hang out and share things with his mom. I think it's sweet.

And by the way... congrats!

If it makes you feel any better, my brother has an amazing & very close relationship with my parents. And no, he doesn't still live at home. It can happen, but there are no guarantees.

OK--I have much to say on this very subject, as I have thought about it alot. I'll probably need to email you! But--let me just say that when Matthew said he wanted to live with me forever and that he wanted to marry me, I was like: "Great! I think that sounds great!" (Not the marrying part--I thought I'd explain that later, but I love this boy more that I ever thought possible, so much that my heart could explode at any moment). It's amazing. I'm sure there will come a day when I really want him to leave and go be a successful, independent, loving, amazing man, who also happens to call his Mommy every day! ha ha ha!
