A New Appreciation for My Mess

As I wrote about a few weeks ago, I wanted to start blogging everyday and straighten the house before I went to bed. Well, lovely readers, you've probably noticed that I have NOT blogged in 10 days. And if you were to drop by my house you would find an unmade bed, dishes in the sink and toys on the floor.

But I don't feel like I've failed at these goals.

Like many of you in the blogosphere I have been so moved by the story of sweet Layla Grace. For those of you who don't know, Layla is a beautiful 2 year old who is nearing the end of her battle with cancer. Her parents have kept a blog throughout her ordeal to keep friends, family and now online friends up-to-date on how she is doing.

As Layla has gotten sicker, she has also become less active and slept more. Layla's mother recently wrote a post about missing the interruptions and noise that come with having a small child. How she now longs for it to take her 45 minutes to unload the dishwasher because there is a little one underfoot.

In reading her words I realized how lucky I was. Is my house messier than I would like most days? Yes. Do I get to blog or Facebook or Twitter or email as often as I would like? Nope.

But do I have a healthy child who wants to play and be engaged with me most of the day? Thankfully, YES!

I do not know Layla or her family, but I do know that they have changed my life. Any time I start to stress over the laundry now I think of Layla and her mom. Laundry is nothing. Time with my child is everything.

So yes, I want to fulfil all of the goals I wrote about earlier this month, but now they look a little different. They aren't the be-all, end-all. They won't determine how successful or productive my day was.

The number of stories read, the amount of time spent rolling on the floor with Little Ricky, the silly faces and giggles--those determine the productivity of my day.

So if you notice me missing from the blog on occasion it's because I'm playing with my baby. And counting my blessings.
