What We're Reading: July 2010

Since we're such fans of Baby Cakes we wanted to add more Karma Wilson books to our library. We gave Baby, I Love You to Little Ricky for his birthday and it's another hit. With similar sweet illustrations and more sing-songy rhymes it's a great cuddle or bedtime read.

Little Ricky also received a couple of bath books by Sandra Boynton for his birthday from his Nan-Nan and Pappy T (my parents.) Little Ricky LOVES bath time but somehow he didn't have any bath books yet. These 2 books, Bath Time! and Barnyard Bath, have been a great addition to his tub playtime. And, of course, Ms. Boynton always delivers cute stories and illustrations!

Who doesn't love Dr. Seuss?!? I want Little Ricky to have his entire collection and this cloth, interactive version of Circus McGurkus 1, 2, 3! is the perfect start! (Thanks to my sis and Little Man for this great b-day gift!!)

While Little Ricky is reading classic children's authors like Dr. Seuss I'm reading...well, crap. Yes, I love 90210 (the original!) and reality TV, so naturally I would want to read anything Tori Spelling writes. I read her first book, sTori Telling, when it came out a couple of years ago and really enjoyed it. She shared quite a bit about her 90210 co-stars, how she hooked up with her husband, Dean (they were both married to other people at the time) and the infamous feud with her mother. It was a great, gossip-y read. Mommywood? Not so much. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't as fun a read as the last book. Tori still revealed some fun Hollywood gossip, but she also talked about being a mommy a lot. As a mommy myself, you'd think I'd enjoy that. But I found it really difficult to relate to her version of motherhood. (An example--she couldn't get her VERY expensive stroller to fold up to go in her car after a day of shopping. She was late to dinner with friends so instead of calling her husband to come help her or figuring the stroller out herself, she just left it in a parking garage and drove away. Ummmmm, okay.) So, didn't love it, didn't hate it, probably won't waste my money on the next one. (But I will check it out from the library!)

I managed to avoid the Real Housewives phenomenon for quite a while. And then one day while Little Ricky was napping I got sucked into a New York marathon and it was ALL OVER! Since then we've (and I say WE because Ricky watches too!) made sure to catch every NY episode, gotten hooked on the New Jersey drama (can you believe that crazy Danielle??) and suffered through a few Orange County episodes (I don't think we'll stick it out with these ladies). Out of all of the housewives we love Bethenny Frankel best. (Anyone else cry when she got married this week on Bethenny Getting Married? Too sweet.) (And yes, I need a life.) So I decided to see if I'd enjoy her in print as much as I do on TV. Another book that was just okay. I think I was looking for more of a memoir and this is really more a diet book. Her humor does come through at times, but this book can be pretty dry. And I had a hard time with some of her dieting advise. (When she wants something sweet she has two bites--TWO--of Ben & Jerry's ice cream and that satisfies her. I guess this is why she is Naturally Thin and I am NOT! Two bites? That's just a teaser!) But her advice wasn't all bad and I've put some of it into practice and found it easy to follow. Sadly, I still don't look like her though.

Oh, Jen Lancaster, I love you so! I started reading Jen Lancaster a few years ago and immediately was hooked on her snarky, self-deprecating memoirs. I love how she's as willing to make fun of herself as she is other people. I love that she has the longest book titles known to man (My Fair Lazy: One Reality Television Addict's Attempt to Discover If Not Being A Dumb Ass Is the New Black, or, a Culture-Up Manifesto). And I love that we live in the same city. I just know when we run into each other at Target or Trader Joe's someday we will be immediate best friends. Hello, we like the same stores--we're a match made in heaven! So, Jen, if you're reading this? Call me!

So what are you reading? Any suggestions so I can get out of my reality-TV-star-turned-author rut?

P.S. Last day to enter to win an iGo Charger!
